I was recently contracted to photograph Bell Helicopter and Subaru Aerospace’s joint venture, the Subaru Bell 412EPX helicopter. As the latest iteration of the storied Bell 412 line, which dates back to its introduction in 1981, the EPX builds upon a legacy of reliability and innovation. This new model brings substantial upgrades, including increased torque capabilities, enhanced avionics, and the ability to perform high-altitude operations with improved efficiency.
With over 1,300 Bell 412s delivered globally and more than seven million flight hours logged, this iconic platform has proven its versatility in military, firefighting, utility, and search-and-rescue missions. The 412EPX continues this legacy by introducing features such as the second-generation BasiX Pro integrated avionics system, Pratt & Whitney PT6T-9 engines, and a reinforced transmission capable of operating for 30 minutes without oil lubrication—a critical safety margin during emergencies.

A Shift in Location: From Denver to Arizona’s Skies
Initially scheduled for a scenic photoshoot in Denver, the project was relocated to Arizona to ensure reliable weather conditions. Spring in Arizona offers the perfect combination of clear skies and mild temperatures, making it an ideal setting for aerial photography. The rugged terrain north of Phoenix, with its dramatic mountain ranges and iconic saguaro cacti, provided a stunning backdrop to showcase the 412EPX’s capabilities.
Pre-Flight Planning
A successful aerial photoshoot demands meticulous planning and precise coordination. Safety is paramount, particularly when operating two aircraft in close proximity. Extensive pre-flight planning is essential, with our team carefully reviewing flight routes, positioning strategies, and escape procedures to address any potential challenges.
As the creative aerial photographer and aerial coordinator, my role was to capture dynamic images of the 412EPX in flight against Arizona’s striking landscapes. Our chase aircraft, a Bell 505, provided an agile and stable platform for aerial photography. Flying with the doors off allowed for unobstructed views, giving me the flexibility to frame shots without the interference of window glare or structural obstructions.
Flying over the Desert
We began the photoshoot just as the sun rose, casting a warm, golden light over the desert. The 412EPX’s bold blue profile stood out nicely against the rugged beauty of Arizona’s mountainous terrain. The helicopter’s increased torque capabilities and powerful twin engines allowed it to maneuver with ease, including some banks, pull-aways, and out-of-ground effect (OGE) hovers, which we captured nicely against a backdrop of rocky peaks and towering saguaros.

After an hour of dynamic flight shots, I transitioned from the Bell 505 to riding along in the 412EPX to capture its state-of-the-art cockpit during flight maneuvers. The BasiX Pro integrated avionics system, shared with Bell’s sleek 429 model, features four Astronautics displays and advanced navigation capabilities. Its intuitive design enhances situational awareness and operational simplicity, offering a seamless blend of functionality and modernity. The integration of traditional toggles with cutting-edge digital displays embodies the 412EPX’s balance of innovation and heritage.

Real-World Applications: Replacing Transmission Towers
When the Bell 412EPX entered the utility field, its potential to transform operations was clear. To capture its capabilities in action, I spent a day with a utility crew tasked with replacing a nearly century-old transmission tower deep in the Arizona desert, north of Phoenix. The rugged terrain and remote location made traditional methods impractical, but the 412EPX provided an efficient solution, minimizing disruption and ensuring quck power restoration for customers.
The day began near the aging tower, where the crew prepped the site for installation. Geared up with PPE and a hard hat, I positioned myself near the base of the tower. Soon, the helicopter appeared over the horizon, the brrrr of its four-blade rotor distinct. As it moved into a hover overhead, the powerful downwash stirred up a steady stream of dust and debris, adding dramatic energy to every shot. I steadied myself, bracing against the gusts as I framed the utility helicopter in its element.

The Bell 412EPX pilot precisely guides high-voltage transmission lines into place as linemen secure them to the insulators on the newly installed tower.
The linemen signaled the pilot with precise hand gestures, guiding small adjustments until the tower was perfectly positioned. The coordination between the air and ground teams underscored the aircraft’s critical role. My goal was to capture the intensity of these moments—the linemen’s steady resolve, the pilot’s expert precision, and the seamless interplay between man and machine in a demanding environment.
Once the new tower was bolted into place, the crew carefully transferred the de-energized lines to the new structure. With the 115kV transmission lines securely attached to the suspension insulators, the 412EPX transitioned to its final task: lifting the weathered old tower and transporting it to the staging area. Within a few hours, the job was complete, and power was back on.
Reflections on the Project
Photographing the Bell 412EPX was a unique opportunity to combine technical expertise with a clear creative vision. My goal was to showcase this helicopter in authentic working environments while highlighting its advanced capabilities through visually compelling imagery. This was evident in the cockpit shots that demonstrated the state-of-the-art avionics and the beauty shots of the helicopter banking gracefully over a simple desert backdrop.
My experience as a helicopter pilot added valuable insight to this project. It allowed me to communicate directly with the pilots, providing practical input on positioning and maneuvers while maintaining a strong focus on safety and efficiency. This dual expertise in aviation and photography ensured seamless alignment between the technical and creative aspects of the shoot.
I’m passionate about helicopters, exploring creative ways to showcase their incredible capabilities both in the air and on the ground. I look forward to future opportunities that allow me to push creative boundaries and collaborate to tell compelling stories of these remarkable machines in action.
