When the sweltering Arizona summer slows life to a crawl, I see it as the perfect time to spark my creativity. This year, I embarked on a two-month solo backpacking journey through Europe. It was a chance to explore, challenge myself, and capture genuine travel and lifestyle photography. With only a backpack, my camera gear, and an endless sense of adventure, I set out to meet new people, immerse myself in new experiences, and tell compelling stories through the lens of my camera.

Every adventure starts with a single step, or in my case, a packed backpack at LAX. I opted for simplicity and efficiency, bringing only the essentials: my camera, drone, laptop, and summer clothes. Traveling light gave me the flexibility to move freely and embrace whatever opportunities came my way.

After a long but manageable 9-hour flight, I touched down in Paris, ready to embark on my European adventure. Planning this journey was an experience in itself, a puzzle pieced together using tools like Google Flights, Hostelworld, Trainline, and carefully marked maps. My idea was to create an affordable, photogenic route perfect for capturing the essence of travel and adventure. Europe is a paradise for budget travelers, offering cheap flights, trains, and buses that make it easy to hop from one EU country to the next. With just a backpack, I had the freedom to explore spontaneously, venturing wherever the moment took me.

Greece by Sea: Adventures on the Aegean

My journey began in Athens, Greece, where I had planned a week-long sailing adventure through the Greek Islands. The itinerary included stops at Poros, Hydra, Ermioni, Spetses, and Dokos, each offering its own charm to explore. Stepping off the plane in Athens, I was immediately greeted by a wave of intense heat, so reminiscent of my desert hometown of Phoenix that, for a moment, I forgot I had even left. Fortunately, my desert roots helped me adjust quickly, and I found comfort knowing that soon I’d be gliding across cool, refreshing waters.

Our skipper leading the way as we set out on the open seas with nonstop sun and good company.

I soon found myself at the marina, standing before the sailboat that would be my home for the next week. After meeting my equally adventurous sailmates, all around my age, we began selecting our cabins and carefully carried our luggage across the swaying boardwalk. With the start of the engine, our journey officially began. The ocean stretched endlessly before us, its turquoise hues so vibrant they seemed almost unreal, while the boat swayed gently in harmony with the waves. Our crew was a lively blend of travelers from across the globe, led by our energetic and adventure-seeking skipper from New Zealand.

I’ve sailed before, but I had forgotten just how peaceful it feels to be out on the open water. Sailing in Greece, however, was an entirely unique experience. The water was unlike anything I had ever seen, completely calm and crystal clear. Peering over the edge of the boat, I could see a vibrant array of colorful fish swimming below.

As afternoon melted into evening, we glided across the shimmering expanse of the Aegean Sea, its surface glowing with the brilliance of the approaching golden hour. The boat rocked gently with the soft rhythm of tropical sailing music.

The energy on the boat was infectious. As introductions made their way around, we shared highlights from our recent travels, talked about our jobs, and debated who among us might be the best sailor on board. I made a pretty strong case with my sailor’s cap. Two Australian friends were all smiles and laughter, making them natural models for an impromptu sunset photoshoot at the bow. The warm, golden light perfectly matched their carefree spirit, resulting in photos that felt effortlessly genuine.

The goal was not to stage anything but to genuinely capture the spirit of the moment. We sailed at a relaxed pace, eventually reaching Poros, a picturesque Greek island. There, we docked and enjoyed a delightful dinner by the sea.

An aerial shot of our sailboats anchored near a rocky shoreline, where we found the perfect cove to swim, float, and relax in Greece’s crystal-clear waters.

Greece’s stunning topography offers hundreds of islands, each dotted with secluded coves that feel like private paradises. These hidden gems feature shallow, crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling and inviting beaches ideal for basking in the sun. After a bit of exploring, we discovered the perfect cove to anchor and settle into. It was an incredible opportunity to experiment with new perspectives, capture the beautiful light, and embrace the spirit of escape and adventure.

The sea was so clear it resembled glass, and I knew the view from above would be breathtaking. The turquoise waters, dotted with adventurers floating peacefully, inspired me to launch my drone and frame the tropical paradise I had envisioned. My vision was to capture the serene yet lively rhythm of life on the water, a balance that feels distinctly and uniquely Greek.

The two Australian sailmates, always keen for photos, enjoying a fun afternoon while we were anchored in the cove.

Back on the sailboat, the atmosphere was perfect. Soft, laid-back tunes by Kali Uchis played in the background as we sliced watermelon, while a loud splash marked Jonny’s attempt to break his cannonball record. As the sun dipped below the horizon, some of my new friends gathered for impromptu photos, laughing and sharing the moment with ease. Being immersed in the experience allowed me to capture its authenticity through photography, to the point where the camera almost disappeared. These shots became some of my favorites; the kind that make you feel like you're right there, living the adventure.

Island Explorations

Every stop along the journey unveiled something captivating and unique. When we arrived at Hydra, a one-of-a-kind island free of cars, it felt like stepping into another world. Here, the only modes of transport are donkeys, boats, or your own two feet, perfect for exploring the island’s charming, narrow streets. The moment we docked, I couldn’t wait to venture out, eager to capture the essence of Hydra’s distinctive scenery and serene way of life. The pastel-colored houses, accented with shades of blue and surrounded by lush greenery, created strikingly beautiful compositions, each with breathtaking views of the sparkling Aegean Sea.

That evening, our sailing group set off on a sunset hike to a nearby lookout point. The trail was short but steep, winding through rocky terrain that added a touch of adventure to the climb. As we neared the top, the breathtaking views began to unfold. From the cliffs, we could see houses cascading down the hillside, their rooftops bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun. Beyond, the ocean stretched endlessly to the horizon, its surface shimmering in the fading light. A gentle ocean breeze carried the sound of soft music as we raised our glasses in a toast, celebrating yet another unforgettable day of sailing.

While enjoying a glass of chardonnay and sharing stories from the day, I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos. Before long, I had some eager models ready to join in. The two Australian friends climbed across the rocks, setting the perfect scene with the sunset glowing in the background. We ended up laughing and capturing a few spontaneous shots that truly reflected the carefree, joyful vibe of the evening.

My turn in front of the lens, rocking the sailor hat while my talented shipmates took over as photographers.

After some time, it was finally my turn to step in front of the camera! Normally, I’m the one behind the lens, but I couldn’t resist posing for a few shots, especially since I had somehow ended up wearing the skipper’s iconic sailor hat. To my luck, a few of my sailor friends also happened to be talented photographers, which I truly appreciated in hindsight!

As you can see, my camera is never far from my side. For this trip, I packed light and chose my two smallest lenses: the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM and the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM. Paired with my Canon R5C, this setup offered an excellent range while staying compact and portable, allowing me to remain nimble throughout my trip.

As the sun sank lower, casting the sky in breathtaking shades of orange and pink, we gathered at the edge of the lookout. The Greek islands stretched endlessly in every direction, a panorama of pure beauty. In silence and awe, we watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, melting into the sea. That evening was the perfect blend of shared moments and stunning scenery, a memory that stands out to me on this trip.

Stepping Back in Time in Dubrovnik

After a well-deserved rest following an exhilarating week of sailing, my next adventure led me to the captivating medieval city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. Renowned for its ancient stone walls and picturesque cobblestone streets, Dubrovnik is a place where centuries-old history blends beautifully with modern life.

My journey began with a stroll along the city’s iconic outer walls, a nearly two-kilometer path that wraps around the historic old town. Despite the blazing summer sun, the awe-inspiring views at every turn made the effort entirely worthwhile. From this elevated vantage point, I gazed out over a sea of terracotta rooftops, their earthy hues forming a striking mosaic against the brilliant blue of the Adriatic. Beyond the walls, the shimmering sea stretched endlessly, merging with the horizon. This perspective perfectly encapsulated the timeless beauty of Dubrovnik.

Back at the hostel where I was staying, I discovered a sense of community that made solo travel feel far from lonely. The owner, a welcoming and gracious local born and raised in the city, quickly took on the role of our guide, eager to share his favorite hidden treasures of the area. One sunny afternoon, he proposed a trip to Lokrum, a nearby island famed for its salt lake, cliff jumping, and crystal-clear waters. It didn’t take long for the whole group to enthusiastically agree.

The ferry to Lokrum was short but breathtaking, with the late afternoon sun casting a golden glow over the sparkling sea. As we arrived, our warm and energetic host greeted us and guided us through the island's stunning landscapes, famously featured as a Game of Thrones filming location.

We meandered along narrow, tree-shaded paths, discovering hidden beaches, each with its own unique charm. We paused to enjoy some snacks, taking in the breathtaking views as laughter and stories filled the air. Our journey eventually led us to a striking set of cliffs, seemingly made for cliff jumping. One by one, we took turns leaping into the waters below. As the golden sun dipped toward the horizon, casting its glow over the shimmering water.

This moment was inspired by a creative vision to capture the essence of boundless adventure. The soft, golden light illuminated the jagged rocks and the pristine, crystal-clear water below. As my friend leaped fearlessly into the glistening water, I captured a frame that vividly encapsulated that adventurous spirit.

Slovenia’s Picture-Perfect Lake Bled

Slovenia greeted me with its breathtaking alpine landscapes, and my first destination, Lake Bled, felt like stepping into a fairy tale. The iconic church perched on a tiny island, encircled by crystal-clear waters, seemed almost otherworldly. As I walked along the lakeshore, I was struck by the harmonious blend of lush greenery, vibrant blue waters, and towering mountains. Captivated, I set out to explore and capture the magic through my lens.

Soft afternoon light at Lake Bled, highlighting the vibrant scene of people enjoying the lakeside, surrounded by lush hills and tranquil waters.

But nature had other plans. The sky, once dappled with sunlight breaking through the clouds, darkened faster than I anticipated. A light breeze turned into a gust, and soon, raindrops began to fall. At first, it was a gentle drizzle, easy enough to endure under the canopy of a nearby tree. But the rain quickly intensified, soaking through the leaves and leaving me drenched. I decided to wait it out, as I had with Arizona’s sudden monsoons, trusting the storm would soon pass. This time, however, the weather escalated.

A quick phone video during the hailstorm, showing hail bouncing off the ground, me taking cover under a tree, and others nearby doing the same.

The drizzle quickly escalated into a barrage of hail, each icy pellet striking my head with precision. The tree I had sought for cover offered little protection against the relentless assault. Suddenly, a bright flash and an instantaneous earsplitting crack split of lightning striking a nearby tree, scattering orange sparks through the branches. My heart raced as I grasped just how close I was to danger. Being struck by lightning was not my itinerary. Clutching my already-soaked camera in a futile effort to shield it from the downpour, there was only one option left—to make a mad dash back to my bed and breakfast nearly 15 minutes away.

By the time I stumbled back, soaked to the bone and shivering, I wasted no time checking my camera. To my relief, its weatherproofing had done its job and the Canon R5C emerged completely unscathed. As I wrapped myself in dry clothes, trying to shake the chill, the storm cleared as abruptly as it had begun.

Despite the chaos of the afternoon, what followed was nothing short of spectacular. I ventured outside with my now-dry camera, capturing the aftermath of the storm. Everything sparkled, as if the world had been freshly polished. Locals and travelers reappeared, drawn out by the renewed beauty of the scene. Couples strolled the lakeside paths hand-in-hand, and rowboats once again glided effortlessly across the tranquil surface. It was as if the storm had never happened, and Lake Bled could once again be admired in all its picture-perfect glory.

Swedish Charm and IKEA Meatballs

From Slovenia, I made my way north to the Nordic countries, beginning with Finland and Sweden. Naturally, my first stop in Sweden was IKEA. I couldn’t miss the opportunity to enjoy their iconic Swedish meatballs, something I have loved since childhood, right at the source. While they were tasty, they weren’t too different from what I’d had back in Tempe. Later, I discovered a charming mom-and-pop restaurant that served authentic Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes and lingonberries, a classic Swedish dish. The meatballs were perfectly cooked, with a rich, savory flavor that was absolutely delightful. With its intimate four-table setting, low ceilings, and the soft glow of real candlelight, the restaurant exudes a cozy charm. The warm, inviting atmosphere perfectly complemented the exceptional meal, making the experience truly delightful.

Exploring the cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan, Stockholm, with a fun Australian fellow backpacker I met at a coffee shop.

Capturing lifestyle shots here took some patience, but Sweden's natural beauty and timeless charm made the effort worthwhile. While in Stockholm, I met a fellow solo traveler from from Australia at a coffee shop. We struck up a conversation and instantly hit it off. Exploring the city together felt effortless as we wandered its cobblestone streets, admired vibrant waterfronts, and discovered neighborhoods that seamlessly fused historical roots with sleek Scandinavian design. It was a great way to experience Stockholm for the first time.

Norway’s Modern Elegance

Arriving in Oslo, Norway, felt like stepping into a city where sleek, modern design seamlessly coexists with the tranquility of nature. The crisp, clean air sharpened the edges of the city's angular architecture, while the surrounding fjords and forests infused it with a calm, serene energy. After weeks of exploring bustling markets, vibrant islands, and medieval streets, Oslo offered a refreshing change, a haven of minimalist, contemporary elegance.

As I wandered through the city, I couldn’t help but admire its deliberate design. Every detail, from the carefully planned streets to the thoughtfully crafted public spaces, felt intentional. For a photographer, it was pure inspiration.

One morning, I found myself wandering into a high-end clothing boutique tucked away in the heart of the city. Behind the counter stood a gentleman who perfectly matched the store’s luxury vibe, his sharp outfit blending modern style with classic elegance. Intrigued, I struck up a conversation and quickly discovered his keen eye for design and a shared passion for collaboration. By the end of our exchange, we had already agreed to partner on a photoshoot.

The next morning, we met at the Oslo Opera House, a building that had captivated me since my arrival. Its sleek, white exterior seemed to rise seamlessly from the surrounding water, its sloping roof inviting visitors to ascend and view the city from a unique vantage point. As the first rays of golden light broke through the clouds, we began our work.

For this shoot, my goal was to capture the interplay between the warm morning sun rays and the cool blue hues of the buildings, creating a harmony between the subject and his surroundings. The Opera House’s dramatic, angular lines served as a striking backdrop, their sharp edges softened by the golden glow of the early light. My collaborator exuded refined professionalism, walking with confidence as his tailored suit and stylish fedora perfectly complemented the sleek, modern architecture of the building. The result was a series of images that captured the essence of both fashion and architecture, seamlessly intertwined.

Later that morning, we set out to capture the vibrant rhythm of Oslo’s daily life. Our destination was Oslo Central Station, Norway’s largest railway hub and a center of constant activity. The steady flow of travelers and movement through the station reflected the city’s energy.

Wandering through the corridors, I searched for a scene that conveyed this momentum. Eventually, I found the perfect spot: soft morning light streamed through towering windows, casting a golden glow over the station. A digital departure board, alive with constant updates, served as a fitting backdrop, reflecting the station’s perpetual motion. It was here I imagined a “business traveler” with a suitcase in hand, pausing to check the schedule, a figure that embodied the purposeful rhythm of the station.

One of our final stops with my sharply dressed friend, with the blur of busy travelers alongside the calm focus of 60s-inspired elegance in Oslo Central Station.

This series draws inspiration from the everyday style of the 1960s and ’70s, when even the simplest everyday tasks carried a sense of sophistication. My collaborator, with his impeccable style, brought this vision to life. Positioned amid the bustling travelers and framed by the station’s sweeping architecture, he embodied the timeless allure of travel, capturing the elegance present in a simple everyday moment frozen in time.

Inspired to Seek the Next Story

This solo backpacking trip was an opportunity to challenge myself creatively while exploring some of the most beautiful and unique parts of Europe. Every destination brought something new, and I enjoyed approaching each scene with the goal of capturing its true essence. The experience of exploring, meeting new people, and chasing the perfect light proved just as fulfilling as the images I created.

Reflecting on this trip, I’m reminded why I’m so passionate about this work. Travel photography isn’t just about iconic destinations; it’s about capturing the moments in between—the laughter, the light, the unexpected. This journey has inspired me to continue seeking out those stories and creating imagery that connects and inspires a sense of exploration. I can’t wait to see where the next adventure takes me.
